Haitian protesters in the city of Cap-Haitien set fire to a police station and clashed with U.N. troops Nov. 15. Over a dozen people were injured; some received serious bullet wounds.
A cholera outbreak that has left around 1,000 people dead sparked the conflict. This is the first cholera outbreak in Haiti in over 50 years. The disease is mostly in the northern part of the country; it is not yet widespread in the capital of Port-au-Prince. Officials fear the disease could enter the makeshift camps where earthquake survivors live, which would drastically increase the number of deaths. The protesters have stated that their government has left them to die.
Imperialist countries like the U.S. and France have oppressed Haiti since it won its independence. American-imposed puppet regimes and the cruel, pro-imperialist IMF policies that are ravaging Haiti have left the country in poverty and without the medical infrastructure to handle the cholera outbreak. Haitian workers are right to be angry!
