About 70 people, including 15 children, took part in a vigil for Michael Brown in front of Kingston, N.Y., City Hall Aug. 14. The majority was from local Black communities, responding to a call from ENJAN (the End the New Jim Crow Action Network). There were a number of speakers mourning the police murder of the unarmed 18-year-old Ferguson, Mo., student. The action, including chants of “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot,” was backed by Community Voices Heard, Citizen Action of New York, and the Hudson Valley Activist Newsletter, which distributed the PSL leaflet to all the adults, headlined “It Is Right To Rebel.” ENJAN organized a simultaneous rally in the city of Poughkeepsie, 25 miles away in front of Dutchess County Jail.
