In a coordinated action by Bay Area high school students, 400 people descended on the main Immigration Customs Enforcement office in San Francisco on Oct. 31 for a noon rally.

The demonstration started at Ferry Park near the Embarcadero and marched to the ICE office. Protesters called for an end to the ICE raids, no federal intervention in sanctuary cities, a stop to the deportation of immigrant workers and a closing of the detention centers.

Three East Bay Area Rapid Transit stations were closed, preventing the attendance of many students who had walked out from school. BART officials claimed the decision was forced by students jumping the fare gates to board trains to the San Francisco rally.

Many news outlets, including the San Francisco Chronicle, made the BART station closures their story. Instead of focusing on the determination of hundreds of youth to express their opposition to the racist attacks on immigrant communities, the media tried to turn public opinion against the protesters by slandering the militant youth as lawbreakers.

Government and media may collude to sideline the people’s movement, but the youth of the Bay Area have said it loud and clear: No human being is illegal! Stop the racist raids!
