On August 29, over a thousand people took to the streets of Chicago to demand community control of the police. The protest was organized by the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression and joined by many anti-racist organizations and individuals.
Chicago police have committed the most killings in the country in the past five years, with over 70 people killed. The people of Chicago have had enough with a review board that has found no officers out of line with any of the killings. Families of the victims spoke out as well as victims of the rampant CPD torture program. After the rally the people took over the streets of downtown Chicago.
While marching, chants included “No justice, no peace! No racist police!” and “Indict, convict, send those killer cops to jail! The whole damn system is guilty as hell!” There were three die-ins that happened during which the names of police victims were chanted. There was also moments of silence for those killed by CPD and their families. The march concluded with a short rally at Daley Plaza encouraging everyone to stay in the streets and keep fighting!
