Atlanta Court requests more information in Cuban Five case

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, has requested more information from the defense and the

prosecution in the case of the five anti-terrorist Cubans unjustly imprisoned in that country.

Nuris Piñero, legal advisor to the families of Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, René González, Ramón Labañino and Fernando González, said on the “Roundtable” television program that on Oct. 19, the court asked both sides to provide more information on the appeal arguments.

Defense lawyers for the Five, as they are known worldwide, had presented 24 arguments to the Court, and a panel of three judges from that body last year ruled favorably on one of them—which was that the city of Miami was not a suitable venue for the trial.

This past Aug. 9, however, exactly one year later, a plenary of the Court ruled against the panel’s decision, which had urged that a new trial be held outside of Miami.

Now, the defense has until Nov. 18 to present its supplementary reports, and then the prosecution will have 30 days to present its own.

The five patriots, who are receiving more expressions of solidarity from all over the world every day, are facing constantly greater difficulties in communicating with their families, said Nuris Piñero.

She added that on Oct. 2, Adriana Pérez was once again refused a visa from the U.S. government to visit her husband Gerardo Hernández, on the pretext that her presence would endanger U.S. national security.
