Cuba’s month-long offensive against homophobia

Cuba’s National Sex Education Center
(CENESEX) held a parade on May 14 in Havana to celebrate the
International Day Against Homophobia. CENESEX announced earlier this
month that all of May would be dedicated to the fight against
homophobia.

Headed by Mariela Castro, the daughter
of Raul Castro, CENESEX and its affiliated social networks will
coordinate events such as concerts, films and conferences to combat
discrimination against LGBT people. The Communist Party has said it
will use the national media to fight homophobia and discuss LGBT
rights, and new legislation that would recognize same-sex marriages
is being introduced to parliament. The government of Cuba has also
begun to pay for sex-change operations.

CENESEX is working closely with police,
the Education Ministry, and the Supreme Court to carry out plans to
foster inclusivity in Cuban society.

The Cuban Revolution is advancing in its struggle to secure equality
for all people, while LGBT people in the United States suffer
constant attacks on their rights.
