Official results show U.S. puppet Gen. Pervez Musharraf as the winner of the presidential election in Pakistan. Despite months of militant mass protests against Musharraf, this electoral “transition” from military to civil rule could leave Musharraf with the presidency and a hand-picked successor in control of the military.
The Pakistani Supreme Court put the legitimacy of the election on hold until it decides whether Musharraf was eligible to run without first relinquishing control of the military, which he refused to do until his electoral victory is sealed.
Various opposition forces have denounced the election as a sham, pointing out it was carried out by outgoing lawmakers who won their seats in rigged elections in 2002. Over 150 opposition lawmakers resigned in protest ahead of the presidential contest.
