‘Enemy combatant’ Padilla sues U.S. torture guru

Jose Padilla was held in military prisons for three years. Although Padilla is a U.S. citizen, he was classified and held as a foreign “enemy combatant” even though no war was officially declared. In 2006, he was transferred to the U.S. criminal “justice” system.

On Jan.4, Padilla filed a lawsuit against former Justice Department lawyer, John C. Yoo. Yoo drafted memoranda on interrogations and the treatment of detainees following Sept. 11, 2001 attack. His arguments were used as part of the government’s legal justifications for torturing and holding Padilla.

The suit asks for one dollar in damages. Jonathan M. Freiman, one of Padilla’s lawyers, stated, “At bottom, this isn’t about money. It’s about right and wrong.”

Padilla’s lawsuit reveals the extent to which the U.S. government will use illegal and unconstitutional means to carry out the so-called war on terrorism. It is really a war for U.S. imperialist domination.
