On May 27, the Cuban embassy in Bolivia announced that 13 million free medical consultations had been conducted in Bolivia by a brigade of Cuban doctors.
The report, published in La Jornada, gave a detailed account as to what kind of procedures had been carried out: 12,967 Bolivian lives were saved, 8,699 births were attended, more than 19,000 surgeries were done, and 1,253,000 laboratory examinations and 204,000 ultrasounds were performed. Cuban doctors are working in 174 of the 327 Bolivian municipalities.
May 26 marked 45 years of Cuban health workers providing much needed services to millions of people around the world free of charge. The first brigade of 58 doctors was sent to Algeria in 1963. Since then, over 140,000 Cuban health workers have traveled to poor communities throughout the world to provide free, state-of-the art health services to those in need.
