More than 2,000 farmers were gathered near a government building in Delhi, India, when the police began hitting the protestors with batons to get them to disperse. When that did not work, the police opened fire on the unarmed crowd.
At least four farmers were killed and more than 60 people injured during the Aug. 13 protest. Doctors who are treating the injured have said the number of deaths could increase.
Farmers and tribes have been protesting the government’s decision to take over agricultural land and use it to develop local and foreign industries. The farmers are fighting for higher compensation for their land.
Last week, there was a protest against a new car factory that is being built on farmland. Farmers have vowed to continue to resist the confiscation of their land, which is only benefitting the rich.
