Workers march in support of Employee Free Choice Act

Workers are coming out across the country in support of the Employee Free Choice Act, a bill that would make it easier for millions of workers to unionize. The bill passed in the House last year, but failed in the Senate.

In Washington, D.C., workers rallied on Capital Hill and presented a petition with approximately 1.5 million signatures demanding that Congress pass the EFCA. In Los Angeles, hundreds of workers braved a rainy day to march 10 miles, from downtown Los Angeles to a rally at a federal building in Westwood.

The EFCA would allow union recognition when a majority of workers sign union cards as an alternative to a vote. Presently, the card check must generally be followed by an election, giving employers a chance to threaten and coerce pro-union workers. The bill would also raise fines for companies that target workers for union activity.

The EFCA could substantially facilitate union organizing in the face of anti-union and anti-immigrant legislation, racism and employer harassment.
