On Friday, Feb.20, the family and friends of Anita Gay held a lively rally on the busy intersection of Martin Luther King and Ashby Blvd. in Berkeley, Calif. to commemorate the first anniversary of her murder.

The protesters demanded that the officer responsible for the killing and the Berkeley Police department be held accountable for Gay’s death. The protest also called for justice for the victims of the epidemic of police shootings in the East Bay.

On Feb. 16, 2008, a Berkeley police officer fatally shot Gay—a grandmother and longtime Berkeley resident—in the back as she stood on her front porch. The bullets passed through her into her apartment, grazing her daughter’s face and narrowly missing her grandchild.

The police claim the shooting was justified, and have joined hands with the media to demonize the family and blame the shooting on Anita.
