The United States and European Union have stepped up their accusations that Iran is enriching uranium for nuclear weapons, even though U.N. inspectors are closely monitoring the enrichment. Iran’s government has stated that it is developing nuclear technology for civilian and medical uses only. It says its recent decision to begin enriching to the higher level required for medical use was prompted by the needs of the country’s cancer patients.
The United States and its allies now threaten heightened sanctions. “Despite their posturing that their nuclear power is only for civilian use, they in fact continue to pursue a course that would lead to weaponization and that is not acceptable,” President Obama said Feb. 9.
The people of Iran have vehemently defended the nation’s right to nuclear technology. Nearly 100 people demonstrated at the Italian and French embassies Feb. 9, chanting “Down with the USA, France, and Italy.” Iran has the right to develop nuclear technology for peaceful uses as well as defense from aggression. U.S./U.N.: Hands off Iran!
