On June 7, Sergio Adrian Hernandez Huereca, a 15-year-old boy from Chihuahua State, Mexico, was killed by a U.S. Border Patrol agent. The deadly shooting took place when Sergio was spending time with his brother near the U.S.-Mexico border.
Huereca was on Mexican soil when he was shot. The agents involved claim that Huereca and his friends were throwing rocks at them—as if that would somehow warrant the use of lethal force against a minor.
Huereca’s killing highlights the racist disregard Border Patrol agents show for the lives of those even suspected of wanting to enter the United States.
Performing the ironic task of guarding a boundary established by theft and conquest, the U.S. Border Patrol enforces the second-class status to which immigrants are relegated. All workers should demand equality and dignity for immigrants in order to build the kind of class unity we need to stand up to capitalist oppression and exploitation.
