Torture techniques include sleep and sensory deprivation, sexual humiliation, simulated drowning and putting prisoners in physically stressful positions. The practices may lead to post-traumatic stress disorder, psychosis, substance abuse and suicide.


On July 20, Bush issued an executive order to the CIA with guidelines for the treatment of prisoners. However, the order is a thin political cover for torture—it contains only broad generalities, with a separate classified document detailing what specific techniques are actually allowed.
