What is socialism?

All the worst people in power want you to fear socialism. Why? Because socialism is about building a society where working people — not a handful of billionaires — control the economy and the government.

Socialism means the people are in power

Right now, a tiny handful of billionaires and multi-millionaires control the economy and the government. Socialism turns this upside down. The working class – the people who create all the wealth in the first place – would decide how society’s resources are used. All major corporations would become public property, to be managed democratically.

This would require an entirely new system of government. Rather than far-off politicians in the pocket of corporate lobbyists making all the big decisions, new institutions of grassroots participation in communities and workplaces would be empowered.

Socialism means equality for all

Capitalism can only function if it divides people, creates a hierarchy, and then spreads hate to maintain that hierarchy. A central mission of a socialist society would be to undo this and ensure freedom for all people who are oppressed under this system.

A socialist government would take decisive action to combat racism and ensure that Black, Latino and other communities oppressed by white supremacy can control their own future. Equality for women would be guaranteed in all aspects of society. Socialism would uproot the patriarchal ideas that lead to hatred against LGBTQ people.

Socialism means everyone’s needs are met

Instead of society’s resources being used to provide lives of unimaginable luxury to a tiny few, the basics of a life with dignity would be guaranteed to all. In a socialist society, healthcare, education, housing, would be constitutional rights. These basic necessities would no longer be considered products to be bought and sold. All people would be guaranteed a union job that pays a living wage.

Socialism means humanity can survive climate change

To meet the challenge of the climate crisis, society needs to take dramatic action – transform the way electricity is produced, reorganize agriculture, preserve nature, and provide relief to people bearing the brunt of intensified natural disasters. This will be completely impossible if the economy is controlled by corporations that are motivated solely by profit.

These desperately-needed changes can only happen if the economy is organized according to a rational, democratic plan that puts the needs of the people and the planet first.

Socialism means peace

The billionaires and CEOs who rob and exploit people here in the United States also want to rob and exploit the entire world. The Pentagon’s war machine is their tool to make this happen. When they want to steal a country’s natural resources or dominate its markets, they make up a rationale and go to war – like the “weapons of mass destruction” lie invented to justify pillaging Iraq’s vast oil wealth.

When they decide to go to war, they don’t send the children of Lockheed Martin or ExxonMobil’s executives – they send working class youth to kill and die. And they waste over a trillion dollars every year feeding the war machine. Socialism ends this injustice by eliminating the root cause of war.
