In a heartbreaking story, an injured,
quadriplegic undocumented worker was deported from his hospital bed.
He subsequently died in Mexico, because he was did not have access to
the advanced care he needed.
Quelino
Ojeda Jimenez, 21,was an undocumented immigrant
working construction in Chicago. While on the job, he fell 20 feet
off a building, becoming quadriplegic. With no way to pay his
hospital bills, he was mercilessly deported back to Mexico despite
his dire medical condition.
His friend Jesus said, “He never made
it to his home; he was always in the hospital stuck to the machine he
needed to help him breathe.” U.S. immigration policy combined with
capitalist “health care” proved to be a death sentence for this
young man. While capitalism needs low-wage earners like Quelino, when
these workers are hurt they are abandoned. This tragedy reveals the
truth about capitalism and points to the need for a system that puts
peoples needs first.
