Statement by the ANSWER Coalition – Act Now to Stop War & End Racism
In response to the mobilization of tens of thousands of Palestinians to defend the right to live in the Palestinian neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah in East Jerusalem and worship at the Al-Aqsa mosque, Israel has unleashed murderous actions all across occupied Palestine. Al-Aqsa is an iconic national symbol of the Palestinian people and one of the holiest sites in Islam, and has been repeatedly targeted by Zionist extremists who want to take it over.
The Israeli government has indicated that it is prepared for a drawn out military campaign against the Palestinian people. On May 10, a horrifically violent and desecrating attack on Al-Aqsa left more than 400 Palestinians wounded, with 250 suffering injuries serious enough to require hospital treatment. Israeli police fired huge quantities of plastic-covered steel bullets, tear gas and other munitions indiscriminately into crowds for protestors, including flash-bang grenades launched into the mosque itself. In response, Palestinian forces fired hundreds of rocket into Israel from Gaza. In the latest escalation, Israel launched hundreds of air strikes on the Gaza Strip that have so far killed over 30 people, many of them children. Two million people are trapped in Gaza by the Israeli occupation and have no anti-aircraft defenses.
In cynical imperialist fashion, U.S. leaders have restated their typical upside-down refrain, “Israel has the right to defend itself,” as if Israel is the victim and the oppressed Palestinian people are the aggressors. More important than the despicable lies emanating from the mouths the Washington officialdom is the $4 billion+ and the indispensable political support that is provided to Israel by the U.S. This support continues despite the fact that in recent months, two moderate human rights organizations – one Israeli, B’tselem, and one based in the U..S., Human Rights Watch – have issued report conclusively proving that Israel is an apartheid state. Apartheid is an international crime against humanity.
Mass Resistance from All Segments of Palestine
The depth and breadth of the Palestinian resistance has shocked the ruling establishments in Israel, the U.S., European Union and many regimes in the region, including Jordan, whose population is more than half of Palestinian descent and which is the official “guardian” of the Al-Aqsa mosque. The new wave of resistance has seen mass protests not only in cities and towns across the West Bank and East Jerusalem, but also in many Palestinian cities inside the 1948 borders of Israel. From the latter cities, thousands of Palestinians have traveled to take part in Ramadan prayer at the Al-Aqsa and many have joined the protests outside the mosque and Sheik Jarrah. Solidarity protests have taken place in many other countries, including a huge march in Yemen.
Many solidarity demonstrations are taking place or are planned in the U.S. The ANSWER Coalition, which has supported the Palestinian people’s heroic struggle for self-determination and the right of return since its founding two decades ago, calls upon all people who stand for justice and liberation to join the
protests taking place across the country. Now is the time to act!
