On July 15 in San Diego Ca., an estimated three to five hundred people gathered at a community park in the very multinational community of City Heights. There the Party for Socialism and Liberation led a rally and march for Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, two Black men who were recently murdered by police. Both of these murders were caught on cell phone video and neither officer has been arrested for the crime. As a result of these cell phone videos people across the nation have been protesting and demanding justice for the victims and all victims of police terror.
Locally the community was motivated to organize a protest, march and vigil with speeches from various individuals and organizations. After the rally, a march began taking over the streets towards Interstate 15 with the intention of shutting it down. Despite numerous attempts by police to head off the march at several on-ramps, marchers were finally able to break through police lines and take the freeway. Following the occupation, the marchers returned to the park area where a local police station is located. Hundreds of marchers proceeded to hold a sit in and discussion in the street in front of the police station.
All in all, it was a very successful action involving dozens of organizations, activists and people angry over the repeated injustices that are taking place due to the capitalist system. No one was arrested or hurt, and the masses demonstrated the ability to shut down key city infrastructure if needed. The Party for Socialism and Liberation was able to reach hundreds of youth and working class people to carry on the struggle to end police violence and the capitalist system.
