The NYPD cop who gained national infamy due to his use of pepper
spray on Occupy Wall Street protesters has a history of civil liberties
violations, according to a lawsuit filed by a protester during the 2004
Republican Convention.
Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna and fellow officer Tulio Carnejo, are
accused of civil rights violations and making false arrests during the 2004
protests that saw over 1,000 protesters arrested.
One OWS protester, Jeanne Mansfield, was able to give a vivid
account of Bologna’s recent actions to the Boston Review: “A white shirt, now
known as NYPD Lieutenant Anthony Bologna, comes from the left, walks straight
up to the three young girls standing at the front of the crowd, and
pepper-sprays them for a few seconds, continuing as they scream, ‘No! Why are
you doing that?!’” According to Mansfield, blue-shirted officers at the scene
stared in disbelief at the actions of the senior officer, one of them mouthing
an expletive.
