Over 1 million people were present at Pride in Chicago this year to celebrate the victory of marriage equality and the history of struggle in the LGBTQ community.
The PSL in Chicago marched in a contingent with the Gay Liberation Network during this years Pride parade. The contingents focus was on ending mass deportations and against imperialist wars that create millions of refugees.
The contingent called for opening the borders for LGBTQ peoples fleeing violence and discrimination. The PSL’s banner read “From Stonewall to Balitmore … It is right to rebel!” linking the struggle for Black liberation and the struggle for LGBTQ liberation together.
ANSWER Chicago also carried placards with a call for full equality and for people to stay in the streets. Chants included “Up, Up with Liberation! Down, Down with Deportations!”
While the parade was a celebration of the recent Supreme Court decision it was also a reminder that people need to stay in the streets until full equality is won. As pointed out by PSL member Ana Santoyo, who was interviewed by the Chicago Sun-Times, “If anything the recent court ruling shows that we need to stay in the streets.”
