On the initiative of the ANSWER Coalition (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism), a group of labor unions and immigrant rights groups and other community organizations held a march against corporate greed on Oct. 19. The people gathered in the streets of downtown Los Angeles with their union logos on their chests and their fists raised in the air. All were seen and heard by the local people working in the offices and banks that lined Grand Avenue. They held signs and shouted chants like, “We’re fired up! We won’t take it no more!” and “Hey hey, ho ho, Corporate greed has got to go!”
The demonstrators marched along the street lined with banks as the cameras flickered and news choppers hovered above. They walked in solidarity to join the Occupation at City Hall Park.
Angelica Salas from Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles said: “We are united and nobody can deny us. We are the 99 percent. We are in solidarity. Now we are united.”
Daniel Gonzalez’s parents work for the United Home Care Workers and he told Liberation News: “We are all a part of the 99 percent. A lot of people are losing their homes and their jobs and that is why I’m here.”
The multinational march finished with a rally at the steps of LA City Hall and joined with Occupy LA drawing a connection between wars, immigrant rights, union rights and the capitalist exploitation that benefits the fat cats on Wall Street. The ANSWER Coalition and the Party for Socialism and Liberation will continue to organize during the ongoing upheaval.
