PSL Presidential Candidate Peta Lindsay completes N. California tour

Peta Lindsay meets with the Progressive Student Union at Oceana High School, Sept. 7.

The first leg on PSL presidential candidate Peta Lindsay’s “Seize the Banks” tour has been a whirlwind of campus events, house meetings, forums and more. Lindsay shared and discussed the campaign’s 10-Point Program with scores of activists, workers, students and more throughout the region.

Lindsay kicked off the week of events on Sept. 7 by meeting with the Progressive Student Union at Oceana High School and then speaking at a public forum in San Francisco. Her presentation, and the extensive discussion that followed, focused on the need to build a revolutionary movement that can fight for real solutions—as opposed to the vague speeches and empty rhetoric of the two capitalist party conventions.

On Sept. 8, Lindsay participated in a Candidates Forum at the 3rd Annual Black Political Convention hosted by the Sacramento Congress of African Peoples. When spectators at the debate did a mock vote including all presidential candidates, she received the highest count among third-party candidates, and second only to President Obama overall.

Lindsay was invited by women’s rights activists from WORD (Women Organized to Resist and Defend) to speak at meetings in San Francisco and Sacramento on how to build a fighting women’s movement. Over the next several days, she visited San Francisco University campus to do PSL campaign outreach, joined a “Save City College of SF” rally, and attended a house meeting in Santa Cruz.

She then traveled back to Sacramento to join PSL members and volunteers for outreach and tabling at the Sacramento City College campus. The 10-point program of the Lindsay/Osorio Campaign struck a chord with students, many of whom are facing growing student loan debts while being hit with ever-greater reductions in funding for education.

In the evening, Lindsay was the featured speaker in a panel discussion titled “The University Crisis & Student Resistance.” Lindsay talked about the centrality of mass movements in every major progressive gain made in U.S. history, from the Civil Rights movement to the movement for women’s rights. She concluded the Northern California tour with an event at Revolution Café in Oakland.

The next stops in Lindsay’s tour are Washington State and New Mexico. In Washington, she’ll speak in events in Seattle on Saturday, Sept. 15 and Tacoma on Sunday, Sept. 16. In New Mexico, Lindsay will participate in a series of forums and meet-and-greets in Albuquerque from Sept. 18-21.
