Outrage swept the city of Bhopal, India, on Dec. 3 as thousands of people protested against the country’s participation in the London Olympics. The Olympics are being sponsored by Dow Chemical, the company responsible for the 1984 gas leak that killed tens of thousands of people in Bhopal.
Many of the Bhopal tragedy survivors who participated in the protest were seriously injured by baton-wielding police who clashed with the protesters. Activists have been campaigning for better compensation for the gas tragedy victims, but Dow Chemical insists the matter has been resolved for a long time.
Indian officials have decided against withdrawing from the Olympics despite the demands of the people.
“This protest is against both the Olympics and government indifference towards gas victims,” said Rachna Dhingra of the Bhopal Group for Information and Action.
The capitalist government of India is showing whose side it is really on by brutally attacking protesters while Dow Chemical’s profits continue to rise unaffected.
