In
the small town of Katy, Texas, about 30 miles west of Houston, high
school students decided to take action after their teachers were
pulled out of class and told they had been laid off. The students
took to the streets with signs that read “Save our Teachers.”
“They’re
just the greatest teachers, and they’re just getting fired. And it’s
not right,” one student said.
Morton
Ranch High School was put on lockdown on the second day of protests.
The protesting students were told to either return to class or leave
the campus. (Houston Chronicle, April 15)
Such
protests are spreading across the country. Some school district
officials and school administrators are threatening tickets for
disrupting classes if the walkouts continue. Students may also be
barred from attending prom and other school activities.
Parents
of these students are supporting their children, including with
strongly worded messages to school administrators.
Despite
the threats, students continue to walk out in support of their
teachers and other public employees.
