At a recent vigil organized by members of the University of California-Davis group Students for Justice in Palestine, almost one hundred students and community members came out to demand that Israel end its massacre against the Palestinians.
The vigil started in the Davis Central Park. People held candles and signs denouncing Israel, and calling for an end of U.S. funds to Israel. Organizers read pro- justice poetry to the crowd, and activists made speeches.
One Jewish student exclaimed “Zionism is not Judaism, it’s racism”! He explained that the Israeli violence does not represent his religion but rather a political agenda that he chose not to support. Another Palestinian student thanked the crowd for defending his people’s cause.
As the speeches went on people continued to arrive until the crowd had grown very large. At that point the organizers proposed that the vigil take their message to the streets and march through the downtown. By this time it was already past 9:30, and night had arrived giving the march a particularly impressive and militant appeal.
The marchers chanted and worked their way past busy cafés and restaurants. As the march finished student activists asked that people continue the struggle and that more people get involved. They then announced a number of upcoming events and initiatives.
Davis has a large number of university students who came out to demonstrate. Students must see this action as an example. All students must stand up and fight back to stop the Zionist violence against our Palestinian sisters and brothers!
