New Mexico is starting to see a rise of xenophobic, Islamophobic, misogynistic and racist statements in rural areas.
Mayhill, NM has a local convenience store owned by a person who has openly expressed very bigoted views in signage posted on the store windows and doors.
The signs refer to President Barack Obama and football player Colin Kaepernick in extremely racist terms, praise the KKK and even call for killing Obama.
While this is being displayed for the public, local media has passed it over as freedom of speech. Police agencies have responded by saying that it’s not violating any laws and they don’t need to launch an investigation at this time.
The story has received national attention in sources like Huffington Post and the New York Daily News; the signage has been condemned by progressive and liberal organizations and shared on social media. However, the coverage fails to point out that this is a growing trend unleashed by the campaign of Donald Trump whose inauguration is fast approaching on January 20.
New Mexico has been open to progressive ideology for a long time, but needs to act strongly against these types of bigoted rants and open hatred of oppressed people. As inauguration day approaches, cities across the U.S. are gathering in resistance and declaring that racism and misogyny are not acceptable qualities for anyone in the Oval Office. The Albuquerque branch of the Party for Socialism and Liberation will be joining the ANSWER Coalition’s national call to action by stepping out into the streets in opposition to the election of Trump and his policies of hate and bigotry.
Racism is a disease, Revolution is the cure.
