Although
the official unemployment rate for the country is now at 9
percent, the official unemployment rate nationally for African
Americans is 16.1 percent. In cities that have been hit hard like
Detroit, the unemployment rate for Blacks one year ago was 25.7
percent. The white unemployment rate in Detroit had actually dropped
from its peak down to 11.4 percent. The rate of unemployment for
African Amerians is normally about double that of whites nationwide
even during economic growth. This is indicative of racist nature of
the capitalist system.
This
gap has grown wider as the economic crisis has deepened in the
country. Now the gap between Black and white workers with a college
education has grown as well. This was a much smaller gap than that of
workers without a college education. As the crisis continues, the
attacks on all workers will increase and especially the attacks on
the already super-oppressed African American workers.
