On April 6, the Bernie Sanders campaign held an event at Temple University’s Liacouras Center located in North Philly. Nearly 15,000 enthusiastic attendees swelled the sidewalks around Broad St. and Cecil B. Moore Ave. Liberation News spoke with a range of attendees.
For example, one high school student argued that socialism is “equal opportunity for everyone because if you work hard you should be living comfortable. You shouldn’t have to suffer. If you are working forty hours a week and you can’t afford to put food on the table, that’s not fair.”
Other youth approached by Liberation News were surprised that socialists supported issues that they actually cared about and were eager to learn more. Other youth reported that they supported socialism because they “know what’s right and what’s wrong.”
Onlookers were also discussing the campaign and the huge crowd that had gathered. Another high school student waiting for the bus reported that he “heard Sanders is for the people more than the other candidates.”
As the Bernie Sanders campaign continues to expose the millions upon millions who are in favor of the idea of a socialist alternative to capitalism, despite the campaign’s political limitations, the Party for Socialism and Liberation will continue to organize and popularize socialism in the center of global capitalist power.
