The profound political crisis gripping the United States continues to deepen and take new twists and turns at a dizzying pace. Every day, new information emerges giving further clues as to just how deep into the ranks of the government the conspiracy to overturn the result of the 2020 election in a fascist insurrection goes.
The initial paralysis within the capitalist establishment has given way to more decisive action against Trump. A wide ranging crackdown by the FBI and Justice Department is underway with the aim of securing indictments on sedition charges. Major corporations are cutting ties with Trump’s businesses, including its primary lender Deutsche Bank. Perhaps most importantly, the entirety of the top leadership of the U.S. Armed Forces have forcefully come out in opposition to the fascist assault on the Capitol and any subsequent actions to prevent Joe Biden from assuming office.
The House of Representatives has now voted to impeach Trump on the charge of sedition. This could potentially lead to Trump being barred from seeking the presidency in the 2024 election. But with the laws already on the books, Trump could be immediately arrested for his involvement in what was obviously a coup attempt employing a fascist mob that was intent on capturing or even killing top members of the U.S. government — a fate some of whom, including Vice President Pence, barely escaped. And in the long term, only the growth of the movement for socialism can defeat fascism once and for all by putting an end to the capitalist system that gives birth to and enables the fascist threat.
