In Los Angeles, Women’s Equality Day was commemorated on August 26. The Party for Socialism and Liberation along with ANSWER LA and the People’s Congress of Resistance mobilized in solidarity with the struggles for the liberation of women and LGBTQ people.
Around 300 people came out to commemorate the adoption of the 19th Amendment that gave women the right to vote. Of course, this wasn’t the only reason for coming out into the streets. One woman from the greater Los Angeles area named Vicki told Liberation that it’s important for women to come together, and how she was thankful for organizations such as Planned Parenthood for the services they provide for women and LGBTQ folks.
As the march persisted, crowds of hundreds chanted “Up! Up! Up with the people! Down! Down! Down with bigots!” and “Money for jobs and education! Not for war and occupation!” In addition, people carried the People’s Congress of Resistance placards that read, “From Charlottesville to the White House, Dismantle White Supremacy” as well as PSL placards that read “Equal Pay for Equal Work.”
Since Trump entered the political arena of the United States, people have come out to the streets in order for their voices to be heard and to stand up not only for their own rights, but for the rights of all exploited and marginalized groups. The key to winning is the unification of all struggles: anti-racism, housing, imperialism, war, environmental destruction, gender oppression and exploitation and so on. We must demonstrate that we have not only had enough of Trump, but the entire capitalist-imperialist system, which oppresses and exploits not only U.S. residents, but all people around the globe.
If you’d like the continue the struggle please join the People’s Congress of Resistance to forward the movement for women, LGBTQ people and other oppressed groups in the United States. The People’s Congress is critical in order to build the power of the working class and oppressed people. On Sept. 16-17, the People’s Congress of Resistance will convene at the Blackburn Center at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Join us !
