On January 27, hundreds of antifascist students and workers gathered at the
University of New Mexico to protest alt-right Breitbart editor, Milo Yiannopoulos.
Six protesters were arrested; most of those charged with outrageous felonies. These arrests were clearly politically motivated. The police brutalized the protesters who were standing against hate speech. Instead of protecting the people they protected Yiannopoulos, who incites violence against the LGBTQ community, women and people of color. They did not serve the student body and community who called for UNM to evict the fascist and stop the hate that he spreads.
Police are charging four of the protesters with felonies, some with “assault on a police officer.” One arrested protester intervened to stop riot police from dragging a woman across the concrete during the protest. He has been charged with “obstructing police.” After brutalizing another protester and also dragging her along the concrete, police charged her with a felony. Bekah Wolf of the National Lawyers Guild said “Clearly, the assault on police charges are ridiculous. Everyone saw who was assaulting whom. It is very common for the police to charge protesters with assault when the activists themselves were assaulted by police.”
We salute the protesters for standing against demagogic fascist, Milo Yiannopoulos and his racist police protectors. This is by no means the first time the bigoted Albuquerque Police Department has brutalized an innocent person. Party for Socialism and Liberation members were proud to stand with the students and workers protesting to shut down this event.
All revolutionary and progressive people should demand that the charges against all protesters be dropped! The officers should be facing charges for their brutal assaults on innocent activists standing up against fascism!
Fascists out of New Mexico!
Indict and Prosecute Racist Cops!
