About Imperialism in the 21st Century
Today’s world grows increasingly difficult for the United States in carrying out its hegemony across the globe. Whether in the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Russia, from leftist governments in Latin America or the “BRICs,” U.S. domination is contended.
This has not been the case since the end of World War II. The United States emerged from the war relatively unscathed in comparison to its allies and its foes. At that time, the United States established its military and economic supremacy; aiding many of its allies, and rather than punishing its opponents, helped rebuild their economies. It created a new empire.
All this was with one aim in mind: Destruction of the Soviet Union and preventing the sweep of socialism across Europe and the post-colonial world. And the United States succeeded in preventing a serious challenge to its domination from other capitalist countries until the overthrow and collapse of the socialist camp, culminating in 1991.
What has replaced that status quo is a new day for the United States. No longer is it engaged in daily battle with a competing economic system, it is besieged by forces of capitalism it can no longer completely control.
With over 1,000 military bases in foreign lands, armed personnel in 130 countries and a military budget larger than the next 10 governments combined, the U.S. rulers maintain an empire, but one that is now constantly at war. The White House and Pentagon has declared “endless war” to be the country’s standing military doctrine. What is driving this massive empire and causing these constant wars? How can they be stopped?
To understand this new dynamic, Imperialism in the 21st Century revisits and updates the analysis of Russian revolutionary Vladmir Ilyich Lenin. Lenin traced the origins of imperialism, and this book picks up on his thesis and extends it another 100 years, focusing on the role of the United States and its military. And today, there are growing contradictions that may explode the world order once again.
This publication reflects the views of the Party for Socialism and Liberation.
“As the world has changed, Lenin’s core conclusion remains entirely valid that war is intrinsic to the imperialist stage of capitalism. … It underscores the bedrock necessity of anti-imperialist struggle in creating a new world based on human cooperation. A world without war!”—From Imperialism in the 21st Century
