On Dec. 27, the communist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—People’s Army (FARC-EP) dealt a stinging blow to Colombian President Alvaro Uribe’s ultra-right regime by killing 29 government soldiers in an attack near the town of Vista Hermosa in Meta province. The Uribe regime has strong ties with the U.S. government and receives billions of dollars in aid to prosecute Plan Colombia—its war against the FARC-EP and the Colombian people.
Under the cover of seeking to eradicate coca plants, Uribe has announced plans to increase activity in the regions where the people’s resistance is most active. Uribe has falsely accused the FARC-EP of being a source of illegal drug production in Colombia. He uses this lie so that the government may continue to receive massive international aid for its repressive war. The accusation is also aimed to pressure other countries in the region, like Ecuador and Venezuela, who have increasingly opposed Plan Colombia and the dictates of Washington.
