On July 14, nearly two dozen anti-war activists in Fort Lauderdale united around slogans and placards from the ANSWER Coalition (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) to stop the U.S.-Israeli assault on Gaza and Lebanon. The many of the protestors were high school students from South Plantation High School and other local schools. The protest took place in front of the federal court building on Broward Boulevard in downtown Fort Lauderdale.
Cars stopped in traffic and beeped their horns in response to placards that read: “Stop the Attack on
Gaza,” “Cut
U.S. aid to
Israel,” “Stop the bombing of
Lebanon,” and “Free the 9,000 Palestinian political prisoners.” Many cars rolled down their windows to get the ANSWER statement about the assault on
Lebanon.
One passerby in a truck full of construction workers linked the struggle of U.S.-Israeli terrorism to the terrorism against Cuba as he shouted, “Yes, ANSWER! Free the Cuban Five! Stop the Assault!”
Gonzalo Vizcardo from Atlantic Community High School said, “Students need to read and see what is really going on and get involved in actions. People shouldn’t be afraid to fight Zionism.”
ANSWER Florida plans to continue to raise these slogans to the South Florida working class in upcoming outreach events and protests.
