Recent developments in Oaxaca have led to an explosive political situation. Progressive and revolutionary organizations have created a people’s assembly and led militant demonstrations. The Oaxacan state government has responded by imprisoning political activists and sponsoring right-wing gangs that operate like death squads.
Speakers at the LA rally drew connections between workers’ struggles on both sides of the border. They discussed the struggle for democratic rights and against electoral fraud in Mexico and the fight for immigrant rights in the United States.
One activist named Francisco pointed out that the democratic struggle against electoral fraud in the Mexican presidential election is drawing broader sectors of the working class into the movement throughout Mexico, including the state of Oaxaca. The struggle also now includes adherents of the Zapatistas’ “Other Campaign” and workers in the United States.
