The Party for Socialism and Liberation’s Presidential Candidate Peta Lindsay is currently in Washington, D.C., on a press tour after completing tour stops in Florida and Louisiana. Check out the reports and media coverage from Florida and Louisiana below, and make sure to find an upcoming tour event in your area! The final stops on her nationwide, two-month tour are in New York City and Philadelphia from Nov. 3-6. In New York City, Peta Lindsay, Yari Osorio and Lindsay/Osorio Campaign volunteers are also participating in Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.
The Party for Socialism and Liberation’s Presidential Candidate Peta Lindsay traveled throughout Florida, participating in demonstrations, meetings, street outreach and a final campaign event. Lindsay visited Boca Raton, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Tampa and St. Petersburg from Oct. 22-26.
The week’s events began outside the final presidential debate that excluded all alternative candidates on Oct. 22 at Lynn University in Boca Raton. In an attempt to silence the voices of the people, the debate was not public and the streets around the university where shut down to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Lindsay participated in a demonstration initiated by WORD (Women Organized to Resist and Defend) at the “Peace Corner” in Boca Raton where protesters held weekly pickets against the war in Iraq for years. Later, Lindsay joined up with the Dream Defenders, a student and youth organization that formed around the state to demand justice after the racist murder of Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida. A march of students and youth from all over the state took place in Boca Raton and then carried out a civil disobedience where 15 were arrested. Lindsay was the only candidate to stand with the youth, as well as present a program addressing their central demands of decriminalization of youth and a call for the end of the escalation of mass incarceration, particularly among oppressed youth.
The campaign received significant media coverage, with television interviews at the RT studio in Miami, Fox News in Orlando and HispanTV in Fort Lauderdale. Lindsay also spoke on several radio programs, including 100.3 FM in Miami and WMNF in Tampa. Melbourne-based LGBT-Today endorsed the Lindsay/Osorio ticket just prior the tour. The Miami Times also interviewed Lindsay on the significance of the campaign.

In each city, campaign meetings took place with interested activists. Street meetings and outreach took place in places like Lincoln Park in the Sistrunk area of Fort Lauderdale, and then later reached out to people in front of the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center in the same neighborhood.
A striking aspect of the reception of people everywhere she traveled was the openness to the Lindsay/Osorio Campaign’s 10-Point Program. People also consistently expressed frustration with the representatives of the parties of the rich.
The circuit of events culminated in the main Florida campaign event at the Elks Lodge 652 in Fort Lauderdale that included a performance of the Puerto Rican Afro-Caribbean drum ensemble and dancers, Legacy of the Drum. Attendees came from as far as Naples for the event. Other attendees included long-time allies of the PSL in the struggle.
From Florida, Lindsay traveled to Louisiana.
On Oct. 27 and Oct. 28, she campaigned at the Louisiana Book Festival and the State Fair in Baton Rouge, and at the Voodoo Fest in New Orleans. The campaign received a particularly positive response at the Book Festival, with many people very happy to take literature, sign up for the campaign
On Oct. 29, Lindsay spoke to a class at Tulane University in New Orleans, and then met with activists from Hammond, Houma, Thibodaux and Baton Rouge at a meeting in Hammond.
On Oct. 30, she was interviewed by the Louisiana Radio Network; Manship News Service, a news syndicate; and The Daily Reveille, the student newspapers of the Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge. Following those interviews, she continued to campaign in Baton Rouge, including addressing a class at Louisiana State University. She wrapped up this leg us the tour meeting with activists in New Orleans.
