Workers at the largest car company
in India, Maruti Suzuki, are currently on strike and have halted production at
one of its four key plants. This is the latest development in a series of
disputes between labor and management at the Manesar-based plant.
The Maruti Suzuki Employees Union
is fighting for better working conditions, longer breaks, transportation to the
remote factory, and full employment for temporary workers. They are also trying
to have 44 of their fired co-workers reinstated. The MSEU has been reaching out
to other local unions for solidarity.
Indian factory workers, especially
those in the auto industry, are increasingly fed up because employers are
profiting from their work while they are left to face harsh economic conditions
in the country, such as high inflation and growing unemployment.
Only when the Indian workers
control the means of production in their country will they be able to do away
with the unemployment, inflation and poor working conditions of
capitalism.
