Art for liberation from Pelican Bay State Prison

We received the following artwork from Jose Villarreal, a Liberation newspaper subscriber in Pelican Bay State Prison’s Secure Housing Unit. The SHU is the heart of the hunger strike, which began on July 1 to protest the prison’s inhumane conditions. Since then, approximately 6,000 inmates have joined the hunger strike across California.

In a letter written to Liberation, Mr. Villarreal wrote: “I recently received Vol. 5, No. 8 with the cover art about the War on Workers. I enjoy receiving the paper and learning about all the struggles worldwide, but I particularly liked this issue’s use of the cover art. As an artist, I appreciate and understand the importance of art in building socialism… All my art is done with a ballpoint pen, it’s all we are allowed in the control unit.”

The art below was submitted before the hunger strike began, but we are hoping to receive more material from Mr. Villarreal shortly.
