On June 6, at least 29 undocumented immigrants were arrested by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in New Haven, Conn. Some of the detained contacted the immigrant rights organization Unidad Latina en Acción.
The ICE raids are clear acts of retaliation by the federal government in response to the passage of the municipal ID program by the City of New Haven on June 4.
ICE contacted the New Haven Police Department and the mayor’s office to notify them of the raids.
The municipal ID program will provide identification cards to all city residents, including undocumented immigrants. New Haven was the first U.S. city to approve a program providing identification for all residents. The program’s passage was a strong demonstration of community support for equal rights for all immigrants.
People are encouraged to speak out and exercise their right to free speech to denounce the ICE raids and deportations.
