News series exposes super-exploitation of immigrants

A six-day series published in February by The Charlotte Observer reveals the plight of wo

rkers at House of Raeford Farms, a poultry corporation. Focusing on a single company, the series exposes some of the crimes that the ruling class constantly perpetrates against the most vulnerable sector of the working class—undocumented immigrants—in its pursuit of ever-greater profits.

The series follows a 22-month investigation of the House of Raeford—a N.C. chicken-and-turkey processing company with annual sales of almost $900 million. It employs 6,000 people in eight plants across three states.

Despite some incorrect characterizations of undocumented immigrants, the series provides an important and painstakingly crafted portrait of life for millions of undocumented workers. It reveals truly inhumane working conditions, systematic denials of medical care and gross exploitation.
