Millions march in Brazil’s Pride Parade

On May 25, millions of gay, lesbian, bi and transgendered people filled the streets of S?o Paulo, Brazil to march in the Pride Parade.


The organizers of the march estimated that 3.5 million people participated. (O Globo, May 25). The annual parade began in 1997 with 2,000 participants and has since gained the reputation as the largest LGBT Pride March in the world.


The event called for an end to homophobia, sexism, and violence and discrimination against LGBT people. Participants also paid tribute to the many lives lost to AIDS and homophobic violence.


Parade participant Agenor de Souza said, “It’s very pretty to see this number of people, this joy, and all of this demonstrates that we are here to fight, that we are happy and that we really want equality among all people.”
