Jan. 20 marked the inauguration of Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States. With Obama’s ascendancy, the much-hated Bush administration’s tenure became history. Immediately, the bourgeois mass media wrote article after article heralding a “sea change” or the “dawning of a new era” in U.S. politics and policy. The Washington Post went so far as to claim that Obama has just “declared an end” to the “War on Terror.” Such lofty pronouncements had been hinted at since Obama won in November 2008.
