Florida students fight school district’s homophobic policy

The School Board of Nassau County has come under fire for prohibiting gay-straight alliances at Yulee High School and Yulee Middle School.

The Yulee, Fla., district superintendent stated that clubs with names referencing sexual orientation would not be recognized and that even a name change would not guarantee acceptance.

High school freshman Hannah Page, one of the suit’s plaintiffs, stated that the alliance, like the more than 4,000 other GSAs in the United States, was started “so that straight and gay kids can get together and talk about harassment and discrimination against gay kids in an open environment.”

From public schools to the workplace, capitalist institutions commonly tolerate—and outright protect—discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. The capitalist class can more easily exploit working people by fostering bigotry and division from a young age.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida filed a lawsuit against the School Board of Nassau County on Feb. 10.
