On International Women’s Day, March 8, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced that a Ministry of Women’s Affairs would be fully established with an allocated budget, a central office and a complete structure to further increase its work for women’s liberation. The ministry, which was initially created in 2008, will also be given a new name that will include gender equality.
The same day, the central office of the new ministry was inaugurated in Caracas. A sister office was also inaugurated in the state of Aragua.
Chavez made the announcement as part of his regular radio program, “Alo Presidente.” He dedicated the March 8 show to women, saying that the struggle for the liberation of women and the struggle for socialism must go hand in hand if either is to succeed. The show also recognized the gains made by Venezuelan women as part of the revolutionary process.
