Rosemary Williams is one of five women in Minnesota who have stood up to the banks, refusing to leave their foreclosed homes. In a heroic display, Rosemary and several friends occupied the house for 35 days. She was arrested and jailed, only to return to her home and keep fighting.
On Friday, Sept. 11, police raided Rosemary’s home of 55 years. Dozens of people rallied to support Rosemary. Police officers kicked and pepper-sprayed the peaceful protesters and arrested seven. Rosemary’s home will be the seventh to be foreclosed on her block.
Because of her resistance, GMAC offered her a $5,000 check for “relocation expenses.” She referred to it as a “blood money check.”
In 2008, there were over 3 million foreclosure filings in the United States. Millions of people like Rosemary are facing the loss of their homes because of the lies and speculation of the real estate and banking industries.
Rosemary Williams is an inspiration to workers facing evictions. In her words, “It’s not over! We will keep fighting!”
