To the Freedom Socialist Party:
The Party for Socialism and
Liberation’s Frances Villar for Mayor Campaign would like to express
our gratitude to the Freedom Socialist Party, especially its New York branch,
for its endorsement and active support for our New York City election
campaign. As an entity that also envisions a socialist society, your
participation in this endeavor is warmly appreciated.
The Frances Villar for Mayor
Campaign provided our party with a treasure of valuable experiences,
useful for the many struggles that lie ahead toward the goal of the
ultimate victory of socialism.
Our agitation and propaganda
throughout the five boroughs allowed our members and allies to assess
the great potential for building a mass movement. The enthusiasm generated
the campaign, politicizing poor and working people, victims of racist
police violence, tenant organizers and others, heightened our confidence
that a successful struggle for socialism is possible in the United States.
At the same time that billionaire
Michael Bloomberg began his corrupt campaign to buy his way to a blatantly
illegal third term, poor and working people face the consequences of
the worst economic crisis since the 1930s. Bloomberg’s arrogance is
the product of the nearly $6 billion he made personally in business
ventures as many workers throughout this city became destitute, losing
their jobs and their homes.
At no other time in history
has it become so vividly clear that the capitalist ruling class, including
Bloomberg, inevitably cause economic devastation for the working class.
The Bloomberg campaign expressed the desires of the entire capitalist
class to launch a political justification for its privileged social
position at the expense to the millions of poor and working people.
This reality made it essentially necessary for the banner of socialism
to be raised in political battle.
While many in the socialist
movement remained indifferent, the FSP decided to support the only Black
Latina woman in the mayoral race, in a campaign that served as a voice
for the voiceless and the most affected layer in the population.
We commend the FSP for putting
aside principled political differences for the moment in order to prioritize
the one campaign that pointed to the fundamental differences in this
society, between the exploited and racially persecuted on the one hand
and the ruthlessness of the capitalist criminals, on the other.
The Party for Socialism and
Liberation looks to unite whenever possible with other forces in the
political spectrum of our class camp. Working toward a united movement
is part of the historical mandate of communists. We recognize and thank
the Freedom Socialist Party’s adherence to this principle.
This experience proves that
unity can not be based on good-sounding phrases. Unity in a sincere
and meaningful sense can only be achieved by united action as we take
steps in the actual struggle to end the domination of capitalism.
