The murder of Dr. George Tiller, whose Kansas clinic
performed abortions, dealt a significant blow to women’s rights. Anti-choice
groups, like Operation Rescue, constantly attacked Tiller, even demonstrating
at his funeral with signs stating: “The Killer Was Sent by God.” Now these same
forces are at it again.
This time the organization is focused on Dr. LeRoy Carhart,
a former coworker and friend of Tiller’s. Dr. Carhart, like Dr. Tiller, is
risking his life to stand up for women’s rights. He recently expanded the
services of his clinic in Omaha, Neb., to provide much-needed late-term
abortion services to women there.
Operation Rescue is harassing Dr. Carhart, trying to get his
license revoked and criminal charges brought against him. These groups and
their hateful, anti-women rhetoric represent a dangerous threat to women’s
right to choose. We must stand together against threats before another life is
lost.
