Despite massive outrage from workers and labor unions, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi announced that he will be adopting austerity measures to scale back public spending. The Italian government approved the budget for 2011-2012, which will include massive cuts to social programs such as welfare and social protections.
The Prime Minister claims that public spending is “no longer sustainable.” Italian labor unions have announced that strikes and demonstrations will take place to protest Berlusconi’s economic plans.
Berlusconi claims that these programs do more than just provide basic needs and must be scaled back. The austerity measures will have detrimental effects for poor and working class people who rely on social programs to maintain economic stability in a time of economic crisis.
Workers should not have to pay for the capitalist economic crisis. Stand with the workers of Italy! Make the bosses take the losses!
