Protestors target BP in Syracuse, New York

On Friday June 11, in Syracuse, New York, protestors rallied at the Federal Building in support of the ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) coalition’s Seize BP campaign. Chanting “People over profit, seize BP,” dozens of people turned out to support the action. The picket was strong for over two hours, gaining in numbers as passers-by stopped to join in the action.

ANSWER has launched the campaign to demand that the federal government seize British Petroleum’s assets in order to fully fund the leak stoppage and cleanup effort and give billions of dollars to the people whose lives have been adversely affected by the oil spill.

”There is precedent for the federal government to seize BP’s assets. The federal government has no problem seizing my assets if I’m late on payments. They have no problem seizing a physical person when they’re arrested, so there’s precedent for this,” ANSWER organizer Derek Ford said.

Throughout the week, these types of demonstrations were held in more than 50 cities and towns across the country.
